**Toads, Frogs and the Myths: Harm Reduction and Wildlife Protection** exists to correct a specific set of dangerous and persistent falsehoods. Two of them get people hurt — **"toad licking"** and the idea that **eating frog or toad skin** does something — and both are false. A third, confusing the **Colorado River toad** with the **cane toad**, has killed people. The page also covers **Kambo**, which is a real practice that does **not** kill the frog, and the **Church of the Toad of Light**. Harm reduction and species protection, not instruction. Alpha.

## 1. The myths, stated flatly

- **❌ There is no method of eating frog or toad skin to get high.** None. Eating the skin or the animal delivers **cardiotoxic bufadienolides** straight to your gut. People and dogs have **died** doing this. There is no preparation, no dose and no species for which this works.
- **❌ "Toad licking" is not a thing.** It is a media invention that has circulated since the late 1980s. Licking a toad delivers an unmeasured dose of a **cardiac poison** through the mouth. **Nobody who knows what they are doing licks a toad.**
- **❌ There is no hallucinogenic "toad" you can simply pick up.** The compound people are reaching for is in the **secretion** of **one** species, and raw secretion is not the same as a prepared material.

### The same shape of lie, repeated for fifty years

This family of rumour is worth naming, because recognising the pattern is itself protective.
- **Banana peels ("bananadine")** — invented as a hoax in 1967, spread by the *Berkeley Barb* and amplified in **Abbie Hoffman's** *Steal This Book*. Smoking banana peel does nothing.
- **"Toothpaste, orange peel and a penny" LSD in jail** — chemically impossible. LSD synthesis requires ergot-derived precursors and real laboratory work.
- **"Cherries and eggs" PCP** — impossible.
- **"PCP is embalming fluid"** — two different things conflated. Embalming fluid is **formaldehyde and methanol**; PCP is a synthetic dissociative. The confusion arises because some people have dipped cigarettes in formaldehyde, which causes **severe lung and neurological damage** and is its own catastrophe.
- **"Lace"** — a 1960s hoax compound.
- **The pattern:** a household item plus a confident-sounding method, spread among people with no way to check. **When a claim has that shape, assume it is false until a real source says otherwise.**

## 2. Which animal is which — the confusion that kills

### Colorado River toad — ''Incilius alvarius'' (formerly ''Bufo alvarius'')

- The **only** toad whose secretion contains meaningful **5-MeO-DMT**, alongside **bufotenin (5-HO-DMT)**.
- Native to the **Sonoran Desert** — Arizona, extreme south-east California, north-western Mexico.
- The secretion comes from the **parotoid glands** (behind the head) and other glands. In practice it is **expressed by gently squeezing the gland** so the secretion is caught on a surface and **dried**. **The animal is released.**
- **Even this is dangerous.** The raw secretion also contains **bufotenin and cardioactive compounds**; dose is **wildly variable** between animals, seasons and glands; and 5-MeO-DMT is **extremely potent** — deaths have occurred, including from interaction with **MAOIs and antidepressants**.

### Cane toad — ''Rhinella marina'' (formerly ''Bufo marinus'')

- **Much larger**. Invasive across Australia, the Pacific and the Caribbean; native to Central and South America.
- **Its venom contains essentially NO 5-MeO-DMT.** It contains **bufadienolides** — **cardiac glycosides** acting on the same sodium-potassium pump as digitalis (see the foxglove warning on Old World vs New World Magic Herbs).
- **Smoking cane toad venom is reported as a sensation like needles being driven through the veins, and it causes cardiac events.** People have **died**. It is a heart poison, not a psychedelic.
- **Historic ritual preparations treated bufadienolide-bearing material with calcium hydroxide (slaked lime)** — the same alkalising step used in **yopo** snuff and in **coca** chewing and **nixtamalisation**. **This does not make cane toad venom safe**, and this page describes the ethnographic fact, not a method.
- **If you cannot tell the two species apart, you have no business handling either.** Size, range and gland shape differ, but in the dark, to an inexperienced person, they do not.

### Kambo — ''Phyllomedusa bicolor'', the giant monkey frog

- **Not a psychedelic at all.** The secretion is a cocktail of **peptides** — **dermorphin** and **deltorphin** (potent opioid-receptor peptides), **phyllocaerulein**, **sauvagine**, **phyllomedusin** — producing violent **vomiting, flushing, swelling and tachycardia**.
- **The frog is not killed.** In the traditional practice the frog is caught, its limbs gently tied to spread it, and the secretion is scraped from its back onto a **flat stick** as the animal secretes; it is then **released**. Done badly or repeatedly this still stresses the animal, which is a real welfare concern as demand grows.
- **The route is a deliberate burn** through the skin — which bypasses the gut entirely. **Deaths have occurred**, generally from **hyponatraemia** after enormous water intake, from cardiac events, and from use by people with existing heart or liver conditions. Several countries have issued warnings.
- **Dermorphin is a genuine pharmacological curiosity** — far more potent than morphine by weight at the mu-opioid receptor — and it has a notorious second life as a **racehorse doping agent**.

## 3. The Church of the Toad of Light

- Founded by **Ken Nelson**, writing as **Albert Most**, who published the 1984 pamphlet *Bufo alvarius: The Psychedelic Toad of the Sonoran Desert* — the document that introduced the practice to a Western audience.
- It is a small religious tradition, and its existence raises the same legal questions as other entheogenic churches — **RFRA** and the **UDV** and **Santo Daime** line of cases. See Religious Sacraments, RFRA, and the Temple of True Inner Light.
- **5-MeO-DMT is Schedule I in the United States.** The toad itself is not a controlled substance; its secretion contains one.

## 4. The conservation problem — and the better answer

This is the part that matters most, and it is where the page lands.
- **Demand is harming the species.** *Incilius alvarius* is **protected in New Mexico**, collection is **restricted in Arizona**, and the rise of commercial "toad ceremonies" has driven poaching, rough handling, repeated milking and transport deaths across the Sonoran range. **Mexican and US conservationists have asked people to stop.**
- **Synthetic 5-MeO-DMT is identical.** It is the **same molecule**, available in **known purity** and **measurable dose**, with none of the bufotenin and cardioactive contamination of raw secretion, and **no animal involved at all**.
- **So the harm-reduction and the conservation answer are the same answer:** **there is no reason to use a toad.** The practitioners and researchers who know this field best — including those who introduced it — have said so publicly.
- **For Kambo**, the parallel point is that supply pressure on *P. bicolor* and on the communities that harvest it is growing, and synthetic peptide alternatives exist for research.

## 5. If someone is in trouble

- **Cardiac symptoms after any toad exposure — chest pain, a very slow or irregular pulse, vomiting — are an emergency.** Bufadienolide poisoning is treated as **digitalis poisoning**; **digoxin-specific antibody fragments (Digibind/DigiFab)** have been used successfully. **Tell the hospital it was a toad** — that single sentence changes the treatment.
- **Dogs** mouth cane toads constantly and die of it. Rinse the mouth **sideways** with running water for ten minutes, do not let the animal swallow, and go to a vet immediately.
- **5-MeO-DMT with any MAOI or antidepressant is a documented fatal combination.** This includes harmala-containing preparations.
- **Never alone.** Every serious adverse outcome in this area involves someone who had nobody with them, or nobody who knew what to do.
