Mountains of the Gods Religion Hermon Olympus and the Watchers Myth

Mountains of the Gods: Hermon, Olympus and the Watchers Myth gathers the sacred mountains of the ancient world where gods were said to dwell or descend — and the biblical and Enochic texts that describe what happened on them, including the prophets' condemnations of rites "on the mountains". Text, archaeology and interpretation are kept apart. Alpha.

1. Mount Hermon and the Watchers

• Text: 1 Enoch 6:1–6 — in the days of Jared, two hundred angels, the Watchers, "descended on Ardis, which is the summit of Mount Hermon", bound themselves by an oath there, and took human wives. Their children were the giants (1 Enoch 7; compare Genesis 6:1–4).
• Text: 1 Enoch 8 says the Watchers taught metalworking, weapons, cosmetics and dyes, charms, astrology and the cutting of roots.
• Record: On Hermon's summit stands Qasr Antar, a Roman-period temple. A Greek inscription found there, published by Charles Clermont-Ganneau, reads roughly "by order of the greatest and holy god, those who take an oath [swear] from here" — a striking echo of the Watchers' oath.
• Record: Dozens of temples ring Hermon's slopes; the mountain's name comes from the root ḥ-r-m, "set apart, sacred, forbidden".

2. Other god-mountains

• Olympus — home of the twelve Olympians; a sanctuary of Zeus stood at Dion at its foot.
• Zaphon (Jebel Aqra, Syria) — home of Baal in the Ugaritic texts; a later cult of Zeus Kasios.
• Sinai / Horeb — where God met Moses.
• Zion and Gerizim — the rival holy mountains of Jerusalem and the Samaritans.
• Meru (and Kailash) — the cosmic mountain of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain cosmology; Kailash as Shiva's abode.
• Minoan peak sanctuaries — shrines on Cretan summits (Juktas, Petsofas) with votive figurines.

3. "On the mountains": what the prophets condemned

The Hebrew prophets repeatedly condemned rites on high places and mountains, often describing them in sexual terms:

• Isaiah 57:7 — "Upon a lofty and high mountain hast thou set thy bed: even thither wentest thou up to offer sacrifice."
• Hosea 4:13–14 — "They sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains … therefore your daughters shall commit whoredom", with a reference to "sacrificing with cult prostitutes" (qedeshot).
• Jeremiah 3:6 — Israel "is gone up upon every high mountain and under every green tree, and there hath played the harlot."
• Ezekiel 6:13; 18:6, 11, 15 — idols "upon every high hill, in all the tops of the mountains"; one who "hath eaten upon the mountains".

• Debated: Whether "sacred prostitution" existed as an institution in the ancient Near East is contested. Older scholarship took the prophets and Herodotus (1.199, on Babylon) literally; many recent scholars (e.g. Budin 2008) argue the practice is largely a Greek and prophetic polemic. Others maintain real temple sexual rites.
• Hypothesis: the operator reads the god-mountains as the meeting places of an ancient lineage with the wider population — the "sons of God" of Genesis 6 — and the prophets' mountain rites as its memory. See The Temple Lineage Hypothesis (Van Kush Ancestry).
