**Invisible spectral flicker** (ISF) is a visual entrainment method that modulates the **spectral composition** of light while holding **perceived luminance constant**. The eye sees a steady field; the visual system still receives a 40 Hz drive.

Wikipedia has no article on it.

## How it works

Ordinary luminance flicker alternates bright and dark. ISF instead alternates between two colours **matched for luminance** — so the photometric brightness does not change, but the relative excitation of the cone classes does, at the modulation rate. The retina and cortex respond to that alternation; the conscious percept is of a steady, slightly unusual colour rather than a strobe.

Luminance matching is the whole of the technique. It is computed from the relative luminance coefficients — **0.2126 R + 0.7152 G + 0.0722 B** on linearised channel values — and one colour of the pair is scaled until its luminance equals the other's. A pair that is merely "similar in brightness" produces residual luminance flicker and the method collapses back into a strobe.

## Why it exists

**Comfort, and therefore adherence.** A 40 Hz luminance strobe is genuinely unpleasant over a session measured in tens of minutes, and the dropout it causes is a real limit on any protocol requiring daily use. ISF reports **significantly better comfort scores while producing a comparable 40 Hz SSVEP** — the same entrainment, without the experience that makes people stop.

## What it does not solve

**ISF is still a visual stimulus and still carries photosensitivity risk.** Reducing the *perceived* flicker does not remove the drive — the drive is the point. It should be gated exactly as luminance flicker is, and it is subject to the same quantisation problem: an ISF protocol delivered on a display that cannot place 40 Hz on frame boundaries is delivering something other than 40 Hz, in colour. See Display Refresh and Flicker Delivery.

The **red caution applies with force**. Saturated red is a hazard channel independent of luminance in both WCAG 2.3.1 and ITU-R BT.1702-3. A luminance-matched pair that reaches equal luminance by using a saturated red against a cyan is photometrically balanced and clinically worse than the strobe it replaced.

## Status

Studied as a delivery route in the clinical entrainment literature and used by at least one commercial device. The comfort advantage is the well-supported claim. Whether ISF produces the same **downstream biological** effects as luminance flicker — as opposed to the same SSVEP — has not been established, and the underlying question of whether 40 Hz stimulation produces those effects in humans at all remains open: see the non-replication and systematic-review material under Gamma Entrainment.
