Fox News

Fox News is an American cable news channel launched in 1996 by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation under founding chief Roger Ailes. It is covered in Media and Personalities as a cable outlet with a long and consequential history — and read, like its rivals, as corporate media with a point of view, not as a cartoon villain opposite a neutral CNN.

The real history

Fox was built, explicitly, to serve an audience that Ailes and Murdoch believed existing television news ignored — a conservative one — and to blur, deliberately, the line between straight reporting and opinion programming. "Fair and balanced" was a marketing frame; the business model was a reliable, ideologically-aligned audience delivered to advertisers and leveraged for political influence. Within a decade it was the ratings leader in cable news, and a dominant force in Republican politics.

What it is

A hybrid of a news operation and a conservative opinion network, with prime-time hosts who drive the brand and the audience. Its influence runs two ways: it reflects its viewers' politics and it shapes them, and it has at times functioned as an effectively partisan arm rather than a detached observer.

The strong case

It genuinely filled a market the legacy networks had conceded, giving voice and coverage to viewpoints the others treated as fringe or simply did not carry. It broke real stories, and its very existence punctured the comfortable myth that establishment TV news was a neutral mirror rather than a set of institutions with their own assumptions.

The weak case

The same design produced sustained problems: opinion packaged as news, documented episodes of misleading or false framing (including the defamation case over 2020-election claims that it settled for a very large sum), and a tendency to function as political instrument more than journalism. Read it as a powerful, ideologically-committed cable outlet — and, per this Library's standing view, read it against the record of all the major outlets, none of which are the neutral baseline (see White supremacy is media-wide framing in SoapBox Oversight).
