**B2** is the fourth level of the Common European Framework and the upper **Independent User** level. Its informal name is **Vantage**.

For most practical purposes B2 is **the destination** — the level at which a language stops being a project and becomes a tool.

## What B2 actually means

A B2 speaker can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussion in their own field of specialisation. They can **interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party**, and can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and **explain a viewpoint on a topical issue**, giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

The phrase worth reading twice is *without strain for either party*. Below B2 the native speaker is doing work. At B2 they are not.

## What it is worth in practice

- **University.** B2 is the standard entry requirement for **undergraduate study** in the language, across European institutions and many others.
- **Work.** The level at which a person can hold a professional role conducted in the language — meetings, reports, clients, disagreement.
- **Teaching.** The realistic floor for an **adult learner you will be teaching** to be working at. See the note on learner level in Teaching English Abroad TEFL and TESOL: much of the paid teaching market is B2 learners pushing toward C1, not beginners.

## Certificates at B2 with staying power

- **English** — **B2 First** (the First Certificate in English), **first introduced in 1939** as the Lower Certificate in English. It is the most widely taken examination in the Cambridge suite and one of the oldest continuously administered language examinations in the world. If a single certificate deserves the phrase *staying power*, this is it.
- **Spanish** — **DELE B2**, Instituto Cervantes.
- **French** — **DELF B2**, French Ministry of Education. The highest of the DELF diplomas; above this the series becomes DALF.
- **German** — **Goethe-Zertifikat B2**, Goethe-Institut. **TestDaF** also operates in this region and is the usual route for university admission in Germany.
- **Italian** — **CILS Due B2**, **CELI 3**, **PLIDA B2**.

Note also **IELTS** and **TOEFL** for English, which report band scores rather than CEFR levels; institutions publish their own equivalence tables, and those tables differ. Where an institution asks for a specific score, meet that score rather than reasoning from a CEFR mapping.

## How long it takes

Estimates commonly cited run to **500 to 600 guided hours** for a closely related language. B1 to B2 is a long stretch in which progress is less visible than earlier, because the gains are in range and precision rather than in new capability.

## Where to go next

CEFR Level C1, which is where academic and senior professional work lives.
