CEFR Level B2

B2 is the fourth level of the Common European Framework and the upper Independent User level. Its informal name is Vantage.

For most practical purposes B2 is the destination — the level at which a language stops being a project and becomes a tool.

What B2 actually means

A B2 speaker can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussion in their own field of specialisation. They can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party, and can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue, giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

The phrase worth reading twice is without strain for either party. Below B2 the native speaker is doing work. At B2 they are not.

What it is worth in practice

Certificates at B2 with staying power

Note also IELTS and TOEFL for English, which report band scores rather than CEFR levels; institutions publish their own equivalence tables, and those tables differ. Where an institution asks for a specific score, meet that score rather than reasoning from a CEFR mapping.

How long it takes

Estimates commonly cited run to 500 to 600 guided hours for a closely related language. B1 to B2 is a long stretch in which progress is less visible than earlier, because the gains are in range and precision rather than in new capability.

Where to go next

CEFR Level C1, which is where academic and senior professional work lives.
