BLURT Blockchain

The BLURT blockchain is a decentralized social blockchain in the Steem / Hive family, launched in 2020 as a fork of the STEEM Blockchain code. It is the direct parent of MELEK — MELEK is a Blurt-family chain — so Blurt's design choices explain much of what MELEK is.

(Not to be confused with the ordinary English word "blurt"; this article is about the blockchain.)

What Blurt is

Blurt is a Graphene chain (see Graphene Blockchain Framework) running Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS): token-holders vote for witnesses who take turns producing blocks. Like its Steem ancestor, it rewards users in its native coin (BLURT) for posting and curating content. It launched in 2020 by airdropping BLURT to existing Steem/Hive stakeholders.

What makes Blurt different (and why it matters for MELEK)

Blurt deliberately stripped features from the Steem design:

MELEK is a Blurt clone that keeps these choices (one honest coin, no downvotes) and adds a no-premine genesis and a founding AI witness, Hathor. See The Graphene Family for the whole lineage.

Consensus and mechanics

Where the code lives

Blurt is open source. The reference implementation and tooling are maintained under the blurtofficial organization on GitHub: github.com/blurtofficial (the `blurt` node software is a fork of `steemit/steem`; see STEEM Blockchain and Building a Front End for a Graphene Chain).
